چکیده

Although grammarians traditionally consider names and quantifier expressions (“something”, “everything”, etc.) as belonging to the noun phrases category, logicians usually treat quantifiers as operators, i.e., as expressions of a different category from the name category. In this brief and valuable paper, logical differences between names and quantifiers are studied on a deductive level while allowing them to be expressions of the same category, e.g., the generalized quantifier category. This means that names and quantifiers can be seen as sharing some syntactic properties while differing in others. The author holds that “the advantage of this approach is that it may lead to a version of a first-order logic which can accommodate a vast class of expressions included between names and quantifiers”.

Security for the Third Generation (3G) Mobile System

The original first generation analogue mobile employed a simple electronic serial number to confirm that the terminal should be allowed access to the service. It was not long before the protection afforded to this number was broken. Eventually, devices appeared that could read these electronic serial numbers from the air, and access an unsuspecting user’s account for a short time, before moving...

Active invasion of bacteria into living fungal cells

The rice seedling blight fungus Rhizopus microsporus and its endosymbiont Burkholderia rhizoxinica form an unusual, highly specific alliance to produce the highly potent antimitotic phytotoxin rhizoxin. Yet, it has remained a riddle how bacteria invade the fungal cells. Genome mining for potential symbiosis factors and functional analyses revealed that a type 2 secretion system (T2SS) of the ba...

5 O ct 2 00 8 Modeling the Dialectic

In this paper, models are constructed that satisfy each dialectical scheme TAS1, TAS2, TAS3. It is shown that there are significantly different finite models that satisfy TAS1 and TAS2 and a denumerable model that satisfies schemes TASi, i = 1, 2, 3. It is shown that no finite model satisfies TAS3. Mathematics Subject Classifications 03B22, 03B65.

Modeling the Dialectic

Models are constructed that satisfy each dialectical scheme TAS1, TAS2, TAS3. Significantly different finite models that satisfy TAS1 and TAS2, a denumerable model that satisfies schemes TASi, i = 1, 2, 3 and an infinite hyperfinite model, with a single antithesis, that satisfies TAS1 and TAS2 are defined. It is shown that no finite model satisfies TAS3. Mathematics Subject Classifications 03B2...

Designing, Understanding, and Analyzing Unconventional Computation: The Important Role of Logic and Constructive Mathematics

In this paper, we explain why, in our opinion, logic and constructive mathematics are playing – and should play – an important role in the design, understanding, and analysis of unconventional computation. Mathematics Subject Classification: 03A05, 03F60, 03F65, 68Q05, 65G20, 03F03
